For our 2 minute crime film opening we decided on having 3 main characters we would need to cast. We held auditions in order to select the most appropriate casting for our film. We decided on having male characters, due to the fact that this was the typical trend we saw when researching into the genre of crime and other crime films. We would need to select 2 male characters around the ages of 16-18 as this is the age at which they would be at school. In addition, we would need to cast another character as a teacher, which would need to be aged around 35-45. This was because this again was a typical trend in the films which had a similar narrative and plot to our film idea. After auditioning all interested cast members we narrowed the cast down to 3 male characters that we felt would be most appropriate to act in our film opening in order to appeal to the needs of our target audience.
Trey Powell: Amadou Diallo
This is our main character and we will see Trey going through the toughest time in his life so far. We decided to cast Amadou as Trey because he is of an ethnic minority and stereotypically they are not the main character of a film so therefore we did this to have an Unique Selling point. We also selected Amadou due to his acting experience.
Dave Ramsey: Harrison Costi
This character is Trey’s best friend before he gets involved in the gang and he is along with Trey one of the most important characters in the film, we see choose Harrison for the role of Dave because as he is involved in the production of our film and therefore would know exactly how the role should be played. We also choose Harrison because of his acting experience and media studies knowledge.
Mr Oliver:Tony Lupton
This is the head of Trey’s year at school and we see him shouting at Trey in the opening scene of the film but later on in the film we will see him trying to help Trey get out of trouble and looking out for him. We choose to use Tony in our film as he is a teacher already so has experience in shouting at children so we felt he would look and sound realistic in the role of a teacher in our film. He also has acting experience in acting in media films so we thought he would be a perfect for the role of a teacher in our film and his knowledge of media studies was also a vital factor in us deciding to use Tony.
Other Actors who didnt get the roles
- Ben Boxall- We asked Ben if he would be interested in taking role of Mr Oliver in our film due to him being a teacher and therefore he would look realistic, however due to him having little acting experience and being very busy due to school commitments we choose against casting him for the role of Mr Oliver.
- Selman Ayhanoglu- We interviewed Selman for the role of Trey as he is also an ethnic minority and this was one of the main things we looked at when casting for Trey, Selman took drama at GCSE so had the acting experience that we were looking for however due to him living in hackney getting him to filming would have been difficult so we choose against casting him.
- Sam Grant- Sam expressed great interest in being part of our media project and was very enthusiastic when we asked him about playing the role of Dave, he took drama at GCSE so has acting experience however we didn’t think that Sam would fit the role of Dave so chose against casting him
