Our film opening features 3 male characters, wearing balaclavas. We are using balaclavas as the plot for our film is a bank robbery and through research into films with similar plots we noticed that balaclavas are a common piece of costume used. We looked into films such a 'The Inside Man' a film about a planned out bank robbery in Manhattan. We have decided to adopt this piece of costume and us it within our coursework film.
The balaclava we will be using will be black, this is due to black being a colour which has connotations of evil and criminality, something that we wanted to convery to our audience so that they are able to instantly recognise the conventions of crime within our film opening.

Initially we casted all 3 of our characters wearing black coats. The black coats we used are very unrevealing, this allows us to make our characters seem very mysterious to the audience. It allows us to cover up any other clothing that they may be wearing allowing them to stand out, in addition, through research we found that black is a stereotypical colour bank robbers, shown in various films we watched and studied. By wearing the colour black it allows us to create the binary opposite of good against evil, with black symbolising evil and portraying the bank robbers and villains.
However, after reviewing the initial footage taken, we decided to chance the
colour of the jacket worn by the main protagonist in the lead role. We did this
because we wanted to ensure the character stood out and was easily recognisable
as the lead role. We rethought and decided to reshoot him wearing a red coat, in
order to make him more eye-catching and noticeable. In addition, red symbolises
danger and may foreshadow future events of menace and threat.

We decided to cast our 3 characters again be wearing black, this time they will be wearing black trousers in order to again emphasise the representation of evil and reinforce the binary opposite. Black trousers were something we noticed in similar film we watched such as 'The Inside Man'.
The characters will again be wearing black, this time they will be wearing black shoes in order to again emphasise the representation of evil and reinforce the binary opposite. We used black trainers, this was so that they would be able to run efficiently in the shots we used.
When the character wakes up a the beginning of the film opening, he will be wearing a grey pyjama top in order to create a sense of realism and normality for the audience. By doing this it allows them to establish quickly the time of day, situation of the character and an understanding of the narrative.
In addition the character will also be wearing red pyjama bottoms in order to create a sense of realism and normality for the audience. We selected the colour red due to it being a very powerful colour, symbolising danger, and foreshadowing later events in the film and create a good sense of characterisation for the viewer.
