Narrative Theory

Picture
Izetan Todorov was a Bulgarian structuralist linguistic, publishing influential work on the subject of narrative from the 1960's onwards. Todorov suggested that all stories follow a set of rules and stages, he said that all stories begin with an equilibrium or status where any potentially opposing forces are in balance. This is then disrupted by an event or incident. Then, the problem is resolved so that order can be restored.

Todorov suggested that conventional narratives are structured in 5 stages:
  • A state of equilibrium at the outset
  • A disruption of the equilibrium by some action
  • A recognition that there has been a disruption
  • An attempt to repair the disruption
  • A reinstatement of the equilibrium

After researching into Todorov and narrative theory, we decided that we would attempt to use this theory in our own film and apply the conventions and his 5 stages of narrative.
