Focus Group Feedback From Rough Cut:
Questions Asked:
1) Does our 2 minute film opening apply the appropriate conventions of the genre 'crime'?
2) Does our 2 minute film opening immediately engage you as the audience?
3) Would you continue to watch the film beyond the 2 minutes you have watched?
4) How could our 2 minute film opening be more engaging or appealing to its target audience?
5) Does our 2 minute film opening use an appropriate variation of different shot types?
6) Does our voice-over give too much of the narrative/plot away in the opening 2 sequence?
In order to receive feedback on our film, we decided to show it to our focus group in order to gain suggestions for improvements and ways in which we can tweak or change our footage in order to achieve a higher finished product and be more appealing to our target audience. After showing our rough cut to our focus group there was several specific areas they identified for improvement. The music used in our film was very popular and was said that it fitted well with the typical conventions of the crime genre and was very engaging with the audience in building suspense and atmosphere. Another encouraging aspect of the film the focus group approved of was the shots of the principle character running, with many instantly recognising the intersexual reference to trainspotting, another successful crime film. However, what was very helpful was that the focus group identified many areas and element in which could be improved. The group said that the genre was not clear enough, with us not including enough typical conventions to make it obvious that it was a crime film. In addition, the group said that we would need to develop the story and plot to a more in-depth degree and it was not clear and needed more explanation to the motive behind what was happening. The group also identified that we could use a wider variety of shot types in order to keep the interest of the audience and be more creative in our film making.
